What is Net Metering?

Net metering is an electricity policy for consumers who own, generally small, renewable energy facilities, such as wind or solar power. "Net", in this context, is used in meaning "what remains after deductions". Under net metering, a system owner receives credit for the excess electricity they generate. The idea is to have your existing electricity meter spinning backwards, effectively banking excess electricity production for future credit, or paid to the system owner in a monetary form.

Benefits of Net Metering:

  • Gives rural families, farmers and ranchers a way to lower the burden of rising energy costs.
  • Generates more of our energy in cleaner ways, improving our quality of life and reducing the hidden costs associated with environmental degradation.
  • Reduces our nation's dependence on foreign sources of energy, a dependence which leaves us economically vulnerable to countries that do not always have our best interests at heart.

At this time, Nebraska does not have a net metering law. However, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) does have a fair net metering policy capped at 25Kw nameplate capacity. A cap of 100Kw or more would be ideal. That would allow for families with the available land and large electrical usage to take advantage of Small Wind Turbines up to 100Kw in size.
